intertextuality Psycho & Stepfather

Intertextuality is the term used to describe the visual referencing between films, it quite literally means that films borrow from one another, they do this to make us, the audience to recognize certain camera angles or aspects of Mise En Scene, snippets of sound or methods of editing in some films that you have seen in others.Examples are Family Guy, Shrek and South Park.

PSYCHO                                                                                                         STEPFATHER

Both of these still images are men holding a knife in the same stabbing position threatening to kill the their victim.
However in 'psycho', the character's identity is hidden where as in stepfather, the killer is fully revealed. This clarifies two different ways of how to make the scenes scary. In stepfather we are able to see the killer's fierce aggression where as in psycho the killer remains anonymous to put the audience in the victims position, unexpecting what will happen.

In these two still images we are able to see the characters forcefully falling in the bath/shower. In Psycho we get a close up shot of the shower curtains ripping. This shows that there is pain, aggression and the impact made.

Here we can see both the man and the woman sliding down the tiles, wounded(covered in blood). This make the scene more dramatic because through there movements the audience are able to feel the sort of effect and emotions each character is meant to feel (weak, helpless and in pain).
