Intertextuality - Majeda

What is Intertextuality?

Intertextuality is a term to describe the visual referencing between films. Quite literally, it is when films 'borrow' from each other, and we as the audience may recognise certain camera angles, aspects of mise en scene, snippets of sound or methods of editing in some films that we have seen in others.

I will be looking at the famous shower scene from 'Psycho'. There are clear visual references that I have seen in 'The Stepfather' with this scene. These 2 scenes consist of two characters involved in a fighting scene. They both show a scene where the shower curtain is being taken down and where they slide again shower tiles after being stabbed to death. Below are screenshots of these references.

  The Stepfather                                                                                              Psycho
The two screenshots of the shower curtain are clear visual references that precisely describe the situation of the character being in a lot of pain from being stabbed. The shower curtain is a prop that the main visual reference.

This scene that is used in both films is completely the same where they slide from the shower tiles signifying they are dead.
