Evaluation - Question 7

Looking Back At Your Preliminary Task, What Do You Feel You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To The Full Product?

Looking back at the skills during preliminary task, I feel that by doing this task it was benificial as i was familiar with the equipment used and i was able to practice the skills I have learnt, because before this project I had no skills in making a thriller opening. At the start of making the preliminary we firstly had a few troubles on making up our mind, as the storyline we created was not working out, as we all had different ideas.

During the pre-production for our thriller opening we had a storyboard with our initial idea with comments below suggesting what camera shot will be using or if any props were required and the location too. By making a storyboard before filming our opening, the storygboard was able to guide us through each scene and this way we were able to make any changes if needed on the storyboard or during the editing process of our film. Also planning the location earlier allowed us to make sure we were available on the days we needed to film.
During the production of our film we decided to change a few of the scenes that we had on our storyboard, as some of the shots were too long or was not relevant to the film. As a group we were all able to use the camera, so we all had a chance to use our camera skills when filming footage.
The post-production for our thriller we have used final cut pro, live type and soundtrack pro throughout our editing process of our thriller film. While using final cut pro, we've successfully used interxuality into our film which was very effective during the victim being killed. However, during the filming of the 180 degree rule we had made many mistakes as we all were quite confused. Using soundtrack pro was harder than it seemed as we found that the sound we needed wasn't available so we had to make our own sound through scratch.
Overall I think throughout both productions I have learnt many skills which i can use during the next coursework in A2. The preliminary task was quite basic compared to our actual production of the thriller opening as we were introduced to the editing process more briefly. Moreover, even if we use simple camera shots we can always develop them through the editing process.

Evaluation - Question 6

Before making our thriller we were introduced to different technologies, such as the editing softwares which are final cut and live type, and also how to use professional camcorders.

Final Cut Pro

Sound Track Pro

With final cut we were able to import footage from the memory card, so then we were able to edit the clips or emerge different clips together to make a short clip. We could add a variety of transition effects so the clips changed smoothly from one clip to another clip and also we were able to add sound effects too, with soundtrack pro.

Live Type
With live type we could add credits on top of the clips, this was very useful as it helped our thriller look more professional.

Before tha camera we were given a short tutorial on how to use the camera with the tripod. By using the tripod along with the camera it allowed us to get the best shots possible to use in our thriller, so it would give a professional finish and the tripod will prevent the camera from shaking.

Who would be the audience
for your media product?

Evaluation - Question 3

For our own thriller we have used ‘CandiStudios’ as our production and distribution company. The reason for this is because this allows us to distribute the film over the internet, therefore worldwide. For example it can be watched on ‘Youtube’, advertised on social networking websites; such as Facebook and Twitter. Moreover as our film has been done using a digital camera and was easily produced onto a DVD, we are able to release it at a local cinema. ‘Candi Studios’ is not a big major company but a smaller independent company.
Before choosing ‘CandiStudios’ we had a look at a different production and distribution company called ‘Screen Gems’, which might have been suitable for distributing our film. This is because ‘Screen Gems’ has released many horror and thriller films. It’s a very well known company which has had many successful releases.

Evaluation - Question 5

For this question i have chosen to carry out some interviews, explanations and a self video for answer HOW I ATTRACTED /ADDRESSED MY AUDIENCE.

THE UNMENTIONED
Having a rough cut previously without credits or effects was beneficial as it made us familiar with the routine of our various shots which made us used our own initiatives for ideas and how to effectively put the right conventions/effects with our audience in mind. After a survey i carried out before making the rough cut most of the people i asked who were my target audience mentioned suspence so it was important for us to have in mind and maintain it throughout.
When we made the 'rough cut' of our film opening we set ourselves some targets for the essential things we were to achieve when moving on to creating our final film.
These targets were:
- The titles of our film (font) - for this we ended up using 'live type' where we personally discovered how to creatively make our credits. After going through the different effects and animations of the way the titles appeared we also continued to look at real film openings and how they made theirs look professional. This allowed us to develop a unique way of showing out font. We found that the audience were amazed at the way the words apearred on the screen as it made a huge impact to the tone that was set to the audience.
- The sound accompaniment - in our rough cut there was no sound what so ever. We noticed that without the sound the film opening wouldn't fulfill the audiences exceptions or attractions, therefore we made sure we had that done straight after the transitions so we knew what fell into place. We went onto soundtrack pro and gathered heartbeats sounds and more. The purpose of our sound was to get not only engage our audience but to also get a reaction from them.
- The transitions in between the shots - completing this made a huge difference to our film opening. In between the shots we inserted transitions and effects over them. we used slow motion for the close ups of when the victim dies this allows the audience to see that its something tragic and to show that our victim has died a slow and painful death (audience will fill sympathy for the victim that has died) whereas, in our rough cut it was jumping quickly to the next seen and no emotion was portrayed.

I decided that i would distribute my video on my Facebook (social networking site) to see my friends reaction, my friends fit our target  audience therefore i thought that their response would be necessary .

INTRODUCTION FOR MY EVALUTION

In my evaluation my goal is to use a wide range as possible of digital technology(multimedia) for each of the answers that i would be presenting. The particular softwares and digital technology that i intend to use are microsoft word, power point, a self video, prezie, voice recorder and more.

After doing research on some of the multimedias that i would be using, i discovered the benefits and how these uses of technologies would help me successfully present my answers.

Microsoft office word
Microsoft word is a well known word processor by microsoft. You can use it to type reports, letters and other documents. It gives you the ability to use your computer for desktop publishing.
Microsoft word also allows you to open a file, cut, copy, paste, use AutoText, page set ups(landscape or portrait) use spell check, use Find and Replace and change fonts.
Although this software is quite basic, simple and common to use each of it's features either make your work easier or make your document more attractive which is going to help me as it less complicated and makes "simple" still look good.

Microsoft Powerpoint
Microsoft powerpoint is a software used for making presentations.
It begins with presenting a single slide which has text boxes for the title and the subtitle. This software us more creative to use as there are various slide layouts and slide themes to change the appearance of your slides. You can also put music and video clips into your powerpoint.

Advantages:
- Can easily input images
- Templates are built in for different appearances
- Can easily add media and recordings
-More exciting than a simple word document or hand written presentation.
- Master slides make presentations consistent.

Disadvantages:
- Some features such as animations and backgrounds can distract the audience from the actual information in the presentation.
- File size can become quite large on medium to large presentations
- Some of the features can be complicated to use.
- Takes quite a bit of time to create a complete presentation.

Prezi

Prezi allows anyone who can sketch an idea on a napkin to create and perform stunning non-linear presentations with relations, zooming into details, and adjusting to the time left without the need to skip slides. You can create zooming maps of texts, images, videos, PDFs, drawings, and more.

Evaluation..Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it too the full product?

Looking back at the skills we were using when we first did our preliminary film i feel that i have learnt more skills and i have enhanced the skills that i had when we first started this project, we had some major issues when we first started the project because we were all coming out with different ideas, but they had nothing to do with the main plot behind the film, which is why we then spent days meeting up to sort everything out until we were all crystal alear with what we were doing and when we were planning to do it by.

When we first started this project i feel that my skills concerning Mise En Scene, Camera, Sound and Editing were minimal but i feel as the weeks went on i really started to enhance the skills that i already had along with the ones that i learnt along the way, i had no previous experience editing before so i was a little bit hesitant but i feel that it all came out well in the end, i now feel much more confident editing with programs such as final cut and when we use it again i will be able to use it in full confidence as i know what i am doing.

The 180 degree rule was the reason for us making many mistakes when we first started this coursework unit because for me it was really confusing as we didn't really understand what we was meant to be doing, i think that all of our editing shots such as match cuts worked really well in the opening of our thriller opening. The sound also caused us some concerns as we didn't know if the sound we wanted to use in our thriller was copy righted, so that slowed us down a little bit.

The titles were a lot harder to do than i thought they would be, we used live type to edit the credits and we had no idea how long it would take to figure out how it was meant to be done. When we finally realized what we were meant to be doing we had a lot of fun playing around with all the different effects that we could add to the credits. We encountered another problem while doing this and that was when we exported our credits back to final cut the credits were not as long as we wanted them to be, which meant that it was harder for our audience to read and understand what was coming up on screen.

I think for the final film our skills were much better than those that we demonstrated at the beginning of this coursework unit, i am now much more confident using all the equipment and using the skills such as the 180 degree rule. In our preliminary task that we completed at the beginning of the unit was very basic and that was because we were using very basic skills like simple cuts and very simple edits, this was because it was only our first week of this coursework unit and know one really knew what we were doing.

To sum up i am now really exited to start the next coursework task next year where we will be creating our own music video, so i feel really confident that i will be able to use most of the skills that i have learnt on this unit in our music video. I hope that when it comes round to our music video we will spend more time editing because that is where we had the most trouble.

Evaluation..Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I feel that i now have a firm basis of understanding for the use of technology such as final cut, before i started this project i have never used final cut before so when we first started using it, we were a little bit slow, but when we got into it we really tarted to get on with it and ended up with i think a pretty good thriller opening, we have also been using professional filming cameras to shoot our thriller opening. when we first started using the camera we didn't really know what we were doing but then we had a little tutorial on how to use the camera, i started to feel really confident and this meant that we were able to use the camera with ease as we knew what we were doing, this really sped our project up as well.

We used the camera and the tripod to make sure that we got the best shots possible to use in our thriller opening, the tripod was there to make sure out shots were of the best quality because it means that the camera would not shake, this meant that our shots looked more professional which took the professionalism of our film to a whole new level. Also we used final cut in combination with soundtrack pro, we did this because we wanted to make some really good convincing sound to go with our thriller opening to make it look more professional.

Evaluation..Question 5

How did you attract your audience?

I think that the main thing that appeals to our target audience is the Mise En Scene, the fact that we have used props such as knives and and blood mean that our thriller straight away will appeal to the young male population in this country, i also think that the storyline will appeal to a male audience because i cant really imagine women watching this type of film because it is a psychological thriller meaning that it may take some thinking to realize what is going on.

I think that the thriller feedback that we was given from our teacher was really helpful as she pointed out some really useful points that we then went away with and amended to make our film better to understand and to watch, our teacher pointed out a few continuity errors in our thriller opening which would completely ruin our opening if we didn't fo out the following day and re shoot the scene where we had the continuity error.

Our thriller film is now on vimeo and i being watched by viewers across the country, we are currently getting some really good feedback on our film opening. i also plan to upload our opening onto sites such as youtube and Facebook to get to a wider audience and therefore get better more criticized feedback.

Evaluation Question 2 - Majeda

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation consists of Class, Age, Gender and Ethnicity etc. Representations of Gender is thoroughly apparent throughout Insanity.

Gender

Insanity is of a man who escaped from an mental asylum. we specifically chose a male actor to act as an mental patient as we wanted to show the generalisation of men being more prone to psychological problems than women, so it made sense to use a male figure instead. Below is an online screenshot of statistics in terms of health issues.

Also, the influences that I have researched previously for e.g. Hannibal Lector used a male actor to represent an mentally ill patient. This just goes to show that this representation is shown throughout media in films etc.

The fact that the male actor in Insanity is a mentally ill patient and is a murderer shows that we have represented him in an negative aspect. Below is a screenshot where he is murdering someone which again adds to the stereotype of men being associated with violence more than women.
