Research On Film Audiences - Majeda

The film audience are categorised as groups of people according to their gender, age, ethnicity, social group and region of the film audience as a whole and for particular popular film titles. In addition, films are also categorised into sub genres and generally certain sub genres are targeted at a specific group of people. Below is an example of this:

< Generally, an OAP would not watch Puss In Boots as it is an animation and it would not be as appealing to them as it would to a child. The fact that it is an animation immediately targets young children.

Moreover, when it comes to gender men stereotypically watch action films whereas women tend to watch rom/coms. This could be due to the typical binary opposition where men are strong and would like to watch a film where there is fighting and where women are soft and would like to watch something easy going. Below are examples of an action and a rom/com poster.

You can clearly see the colour contrast immediately. Women would want to watch that rom/com as they see a familiar colour and boys would want to watch that action film as they also see a familicar colour.

On the other hand, the target audience for a thriller film would be adults mostly aged 18+. This is because most thrillers involve violence and psychological issues which may be inappropriate for young children. The target audience for thriller films are people who are intrigued and they like thinking and working out what the storyline is about. The target audience are not children and oap's, as thrillers would not intrest them as it would require them to think of the storyline in great detail. Below, is an example of a thriller film Inception's poster. The poster itself shows its quite complex and mind challenging.
